After the war, Alberto Roda, following a brief career as an apprentice and gardener, found his true calling at the unforgettable Il Pappagallo in Brodo — a beloved dining spot on Via Belvedere — together with his wife Anna.
Twelve years of experience at the stove were enough for him to take over what is still considered an institution in the city: Da Bertino, a historic eatery that has won the loyalty of countless Bolognese and tourists alike, many of whom return to Bologna specifically for the timeless warmth radiated by this establishment, now run by the couple’s children, Stefano and Claudia, aided by the third generation.

The family management and the deeply traditional menu are its most distinctive hallmarks. Here, despite trends and passing fashions, the rich and hearty Emilian spirit has never been compromised. The backbone of the cuisine remains the classic pillars of tradition, enriched by seasonal risottos, mushroom-based dishes, and grilled meats.

Particularly striking is the carving trolley of boiled and roasted meats, masterfully handled by Stefano, with Claudia personally plating dishes in the kitchen, where she leads a mostly female brigade. The selection includes the traditional cuts — chicken, beef, tongue, veal head, and cotechino — accompanied by sides such as mashed potatoes, salsa verde, braised beans, sweet-and-sour onions, and friggione. The Prague ham, roast pork neck, roast veal, and galantine, along with fried cubes of polenta, complete the main courses.

Even the desserts, mostly spoon-based and prepared from old family recipes, steal the spotlight — perfectly capturing the spirit of old Bologna that lives on within these walls.
