In Bologna, there are restaurants that have truly shaped the city’s gastronomic and cultural history. Among them, Il Battibecco stands out as a rare example of consistency, quality, and continuity. Despite the evolving restaurant scene—with countless openings and closures marked by fleeting trends and superficial offerings—this establishment has remained true to itself, maintaining the highest standards.

Located in a charming alley beside Piazza Maggiore, Il Battibecco has stayed discreet yet strong. Although it may receive less media attention today, especially on food-focused platforms, it remains deeply loved by a diverse local and international clientele. Even during the height of the delivery era, reservations needed to be made days in advance.

Much of this success is thanks to the foresight of Nico Costa, who successfully passed the restaurant’s identity to his daughter Erika. Now leading the front of house with elegance and savoir-faire, Erika works in perfect harmony with Chef Paolo Russo. Together, they’ve upheld and evolved the restaurant’s philosophy—bridging tradition and modernity with grace and precision.

Signature dishes include the egg-based rigatoni with mantis shrimp, a masterclass in balance and technique, and the ombrina tartare with pear and almonds—an appetizer that’s both dynamic and refined. Other standout plates include golden baby squid on soft white corn polenta, and the flawlessly cooked turbot with vegetables and purple potato cream. The menu is guided by seasonality and meticulous detail, enriched with thoughtful combinations of sauces, herbs, and emulsions that evoke the lively rhythm of a 70s or 80s dancefloor—much like the restaurant’s own timeless energy.

The space itself, designed by Andrea Trebbi, is one of the most captivating in Bologna’s historic center: understated elegance, refined materials, and a distinctive aesthetic far from clichés or trendy imitations. The wine cellar offers a classic selection at fair prices, well-suited to its loyal, discerning clientele.

Il Battibecco doesn’t need flashy tricks to prove its worth—it’s a restaurant that has shaped Bologna’s fine dining scene and continues to offer excellence, authenticity, and soul. A place to recommend with pride to those who appreciate elevated cuisine with genuine character.
